Born on June 12, 1957, in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar hails from a humble background that instilled in him a deep understanding of the challenges faced by common people. His early experiences in Gwalior shaped his empathetic approach to public service, driving him to represent and advocate for his community.
Political Trajectory in Madhya Pradesh
Shri Tomar’s political journey commenced in Madhya Pradesh, where he was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Gwalior constituency in 1998. His dedication and leadership qualities led to his re-election in 2003. During his tenure, he focused on grassroots development, emphasizing the importance of infrastructure and public welfare. His commitment to his constituents earned him respect and recognition within the political sphere.
Leadership within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
In 2006, Shri Tomar’s leadership skills were acknowledged as he was appointed the state party president of the BJP in Madhya Pradesh. His strategic vision and organizational capabilities contributed significantly to strengthening the party’s presence in the state. Under his guidance, the party witnessed substantial growth, reflecting his ability to connect with the masses and address their concerns effectively.
Parliamentary Contributions and Ministerial Roles
Shri Tomar’s political acumen led to his election to the Rajya Sabha in 2009, representing Madhya Pradesh. His tenure in the upper house was marked by active participation in debates and policy-making processes, focusing on national development and public welfare. In 2014, he was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha from the Gwalior constituency and subsequently appointed as the Minister of Labour and Employment, Minister of Steel, and Minister of Mines in the Modi government. His tenure in these ministries was characterized by initiatives aimed at boosting industrial growth and ensuring labor welfare.
Exceptional Work as Union Minister
As the Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare since 2019, Shri Tomar has been instrumental in implementing policies aimed at modernizing agriculture and improving farmers’ livelihoods. His efforts have led to record grain production, reflecting his commitment to enhancing the agricultural sector. Under his leadership, initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) have been launched to provide financial support to farmers, ensuring their economic stability and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
Inauguration of the Millets Experience Centre
In April 2023, Shri Tomar inaugurated the Millets Experience Centre (MEC) at Dilli Haat, New Delhi, in collaboration with the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. (NAFED). This initiative aimed to promote the dietary benefits of millets (Shree Anna) and encourage their inclusion in regular meals. The MEC features a live kitchen serving millet-based dishes and showcases products developed by various millet-centric startups, reflecting Shri Tomar’s commitment to diversifying agricultural practices and promoting healthy eating habits.
